HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Southampton Owner’s Guide

We stock and install HeatShield-compatible chimney caps throughout Southampton, with most replacements running $340-$680 installed depending on flue size and whether your crown needs resealing during the job. Because we carry Gelco and Copperfield equivalents on the truck as well, we can match the right cap to your existing HeatShield system the same day you call. Southampton homeowners usually discover the problem after a hard northeaster - water stains on the firebox floor, or a cap rattling loose in the wind off Shinnecock Bay.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield does not manufacture its own chimney caps. The brand built its reputation on cerfractory flue resurfacing and liner systems, so when you have a “HeatShield chimney cap,” what you typically have is a cap installed by a contractor who also works with HeatShield materials, or a cap paired with a HeatShield liner in a prior job. The cap itself is usually a Gelco, Famco, or Olympia Chimney unit sized to the flue.

To identify what you actually need, check the stamped label on the cap’s skirt or the inside of the mesh screen. Gelco caps carry a model prefix - GC for standard, GCSS for stainless - followed by the flue diameter. Olympia uses OL-series numbering. If the label is rusted away, measure the flue tile inside diameter, not the crown outside edge. Southampton’s older homes, especially the 1920s shingled places near Hill Street, often have 8×8 or 8×12 flue tiles that do not match modern standard sizing.

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with HeatShield. We source OEM-equivalent caps from Gelco, Olympia, and Famco, and we will tell you straight when the aftermarket part is identical to the original and when it is not worth the savings.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust streaks down the chimney face. Stainless caps should not bleed rust. If you see orange staining on the brick below the crown, the cap is either galvanized steel mis-sold as stainless, or the 304-grade mesh has degraded from salt air exposure. In Southampton, within two miles of the bay, we see this accelerated by a factor of two.
  • Mesh screen pulling away from the frame. The spot-welds on cheaper caps fail after five to seven years of thermal cycling. Once the mesh gaps, squirrels and starlings have a direct path. We pulled a nest the size of a basketball from a Jobs Lane chimney last March because the homeowner ignored this for one season.
  • Cap sitting crooked or tilted after wind. The mounting brackets have corroded, or the masonry screws have backed out of deteriorating crown concrete. A tilted cap channels water into the flue instead of away from it.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. This means the cap is missing entirely, the lid is cracked, or the flue is oversize for the cap and driving rain is entering around the edges. Southampton’s spring storms come in low and hard from the southeast; a cap that works in Kansas fails here.
  • Draft problems and smoky fires. A cap with clogged mesh from creosote buildup restricts airflow. HeatShield liner systems need proper draft to perform; a choked cap undermines the whole repair you already paid for.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Standard stainless cap (6″-8″ round flue) $340-$480
Oversize or custom-fit cap (9″-13″) $480-$620
Crown resealing during cap install $120-$180
Flue tile repair (if cracked at top) $200-$340

The range depends on three things: flue size and shape, whether we need to fabricate a custom adapter for an odd tile, and the condition of the crown we are mounting to. We do not bolt a new cap onto crumbling concrete. If the crown is cracked, we reseal it with CrownCoat or recommend a full rebuild, and we show you the photo before you decide.

Every cap installation includes a Level-2 camera inspection of the flue above the smoke chamber, photos you can see, and a plain-English verdict. The work is covered by our 90-Day Done Right Promise - in writing, no arguing. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check three things from the ground with binoculars: whether the cap is present, whether it sits level, and whether the mesh is intact. Do not climb the roof. Southampton’s older colonials have steep pitches, and the composite shingles common after the 1990s get slick with morning dew even in dry weather.

Where DIY goes wrong: measuring the flue tile from the roof edge is unreliable, and guessing the size orders a cap that either gaps or does not seat. Worse, driving masonry screws into a cracked crown splits it further. We have been called to jobs where a homeowner’s cap blew off the same winter because the brackets were fastened to loose mortar, not solid concrete.

Most of our Southampton cap replacements take under two hours. We carry the common sizes, the adapters, and the sealants on every truck. Call (516) 619-2915 and we will walk through what you are seeing before we schedule anything.
